ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude free plans — what's different for work? (as of October 2026)

AI adoption guideSOL LABS AI3 min read

"Let's just try the free version first" is easy to say, but when you go to recommend it to your team, it's surprisingly unclear how far each tool goes for free. This post collects only what we confirmed on each company's official pricing and help pages on October 6, 2026, reorganized around everyday work. Plans and limits change often, so please double-check the official pages in "References" below before you rely on them.

What the free versions can do, by task

"Yes" in the table means the feature is available; none of the three companies publishes a fixed daily number for their free tier. When you hit a limit, the app tells you, and it opens up again after some time.

What changes this month: Gemini's free model

The biggest change is Gemini. According to Google's official help page, from October 9 personal accounts without a subscription can only use Flash-Lite (a light, fast model). AI Plus goes up to Flash, and AI Pro and Ultra get the Pro model.

Usage limits also differ by plan. They refill every 5 hours with a weekly maximum; AI Plus gets 2x the base limit and AI Pro 4x. Heavy features like image generation and Deep Research are noted to use up the limit faster.

For light work like email drafts and short summaries, the free model is often enough. If you frequently need long-document analysis or multi-step reasoning, that's the time to compare plans.

Strengths and caveats of each tool

ChatGPT — Even on the free plan you can try web search, file uploads, image generation and data analysis. If you put your role and preferred answer format in custom instructions, you don't have to repeat the same explanation every time. Files, images and voice have their own limits, separate from everyday chat.

Gemini — Easy to start with for teams already used to Google search and Google services. A new feature lets you save frequently used instructions as "Skills" and call them up again. After Oct 9 the free model is fixed to Flash-Lite, so compare the quality of long analyses yourself.

Claude — The free plan includes web search, file creation and code execution, memory across chats, and app connections, and you can create up to 5 projects. There's no published number for the free message limit, so heavy daily users may hit it first.

All three share one caveat. Don't paste anything that must not leave the company — customer data, contract amounts, HR records — straight into a free tool. Build the habit of asking with names and numbers removed first.

3 checks for starting free as a team and deciding when to upgrade

Before choosing a tool, check these three things first.

  • Have you picked 3 recurring tasks? Choose work that repeats every week — a report's opening paragraph, reply emails, spreadsheet formulas — and use the same prompts for two weeks.
  • Who hits the limit? Instead of the whole team, check whether upgrading just the one or two people who often hit the limit is enough.
  • Do you have a rule for what must not go in? Free or paid, write down in one line which data you won't enter, and the rule stays even if you switch tools.

The free versions are enough to find out "does AI fit our work?" You can decide on a paid plan when limits and quality actually get in the way.
