When images, quotes and zip files pile up in your Downloads folder, moving them one by one takes ages. Connect the folder to the Claude desktop app and you can hand this off with one instruction. This post is the companion guide to the Sol AI short "What happens when you ask Claude to organize a folder?"
Step 01: Connect one folder in the desktop app
According to the help center, this requires a paid plan, and working with local files requires the Claude desktop app for macOS or Windows to be open. Claude can only read and write files in folders you've connected, so start with just the folder you want to tidy.

Step 02: One line of instructions
Keep the rule short and include what not to do.
Sort the files in this folder into folders by date, then by images, documents and archives.
Don't delete anything.

Step 03: Review the plan; deletion needs your permission
The help center says Claude analyzes your request and creates a plan you can follow, and it requires your explicit permission before permanently deleting any files. If you don't like the plan, ask for a change before it runs.

Result
The messy files end up in folders by date and type. Check the result yourself the first time; if you like the rule, reuse the same instruction next month.

Checklist before you start
- Practice on an unimportant folder first
- Always include "don't delete anything"
- Read the plan before you approve it
- Don't connect folders with confidential or customer data
